 Beautiful Change

By Heather Queja

When I stand in front of my mirror every day I prepare myself to make a masterpiece on a unique canvas. I start with removing any make up I was not able to get off the night before, then I use a 3 step process of a facial scrub, toner pads, and light moisturizer. I feel much like an artist laying out brushes picking different shades, tones and pigments to apply to my face. I think of how each color coordinates with the rest of my attire for the day, where I’m going and the environment around me. Everyday I create a new masterpiece on a unique canvas and I’m proud. I want to know more, and go deeper into what beauty and wellness is.  Using what I know and extend it out to other people help them to learn their face is their very own unique canvas to make a master piece of. A career in beauty and wellness will not only allow me to help others but to prove myself to so many people as well as me.

Something that I love about this industry that many people may not realize is how vulnerable people are when they come to you. They open up about a problem or often an insecurity they are having with their skin and completely trust in you to improve the situation and give them answers on what is going on. It has been shocking to me how many times since I’ve worked at the front desk of Massage Envy people come in and open up about a situation they have had for years before coming in for help. I want to be able to come into people’s live as their esthetician and partner with them to have treatments done to help them as well as help them enhance their at home care to improve something they have been dealing with for years or even since childhood. Making a change in someone else’s life will also make a change in mine.

I have spent many years with lack of self confidence and indecisive. I was unsure with what I wanted to do with my life and lacked the confidence that I could even make it happen if I could decide what I wanted. This lack of self confidence almost caused me not to graduate high school. If I thought what I did was not good enough I would not turn it in, which combined with a few illnesses that kept me out of school caused me to be a half a year behind by senior year. I was extremely discouraged as I was told that it would probably be best if I just went to a different school which could help speed up the process and I might be able to graduate at the end of summer. Something switched and I chose to go to school from 7:30 am to 8:30pm and make sure I graduated at the school I started and in June with the rest of my class. One of the main reasons I chose to stay was my Fashion and Merchandising class. My school was the only school that provided it as an alternative art class. This class was what encouraged me through it all. I learned here that the things so many people thought were just “girly girl” hobbies  were something I could use as a career to make a difference it turned my life around I realized I wanted to be an esthetician and make up artist.

Becoming a licensed esthetician is one of the only confident decisions I have ever made. I can finally prove that the things I love to do can be tools in a career that truly can make a difference in people’s lives, not only with their self image but in their self confidence as well. The beauty and wellness industry has already changed my life significantly now it will change my life each time I help improve another life.
